Time To Stop Smoking: Quit Smoking
Therapies
Every too often I hear smokers say they will
stop smoking when the time is right. But when is the
right time to stop smoking? Or is this just another
excuse to never ever stop smoking at all? If after this
short introduction you are still reading this article,
then perhaps your right time to stop smoking is now! Let
me explain...
Every too often I hear
smokers say they will stop smoking when the time is right. But
when is the right time to stop smoking? Or is this just another
excuse to never ever stop smoking at all? If after this short
introduction you are still reading this article, then perhaps
your right time to stop smoking is now! Let me
explain.
When I receive calls about
the smoking cessation therapy, I'm usually asked, "how much
will it cost to stop smoking"? Then, my honest respond
is, "A lot less than it will cost to keep smoking, and I don't
just mean the money".
Getting Rid of the
Smoking Habit
The question is: Do you
really want to stop??? How desperately do you WANT to stop
smoking? If you truly want to stop smoking, then maybe your
first port of call should be your doctor's practice.
They will have trained nurses
to help you with counseling, stop smoking patches, stop smoking
gums and advice. This approach might work for you, but for the
people who turn to their hypnotherapist for assistance, this
approach obviously hasn't helped. And I see lots of them.
People like you, who just find it too hard to finally stop
smoking. If this is you, read on...
Before diving deeper into the
details, please remember that every well trained and qualified
Hypnotherapist, really, and I mean really wants you to
stop-smoking. A professional hypnotherapist knows exactly
what smoking does to people. And to their entire family when
they become ill and perhaps die. Not to talk about the
destroying effects of passive smoking your loved ones are
inevitably exposed to.
I want to make it very clear
to you that one in every two individuals who smoke will die of
a smoking related disease, perhaps as young as 65 years, the
average age of death for a smoker. If you still believe smoking
is not more dangerous than non smoking, this article is not for
you. You haven´t arrived at the point yet. Go back to where you
came from and wait for the things to happen. If not, read
on.
Does Smoking Really
Kill?
Good grief, what a question!
As a matter of fact yet alone in the UK a person dies of
smoking related diseases every five minutes... just think about
that! This is a much higher death toll than all accidents,
AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse all rolled up together. And as if
that is not already enough, there are those countless numbers
who need to have amputations, struggle on with breathing
difficulties and wheezing and coughing for a long time before
the habit finally finishes them off in a slow and painful
death. I do not mention this in order not to scare you. I
mention it in order to scare you! Scare you with the fatal
truth about smoking. In the hope to be able to come to your
rescue.
It has already been in the
60's that tobacco and cancer where first linked together. No,
not the 1960's. I am talking about as early as the 1760's. Yes,
you´ve heard that correctly, the 1760's. Fact is this: in 1761
a London Doctor called John Hill found that tobacco in the form
of snuff caused pollypusses (small tumors) in the respiratory
tract of many people who used it.
And cigarette smoke? Is it
different? Well, just take a look at what you breath in
when you take a nice long drag on your cigarette.
Information on
Constituents of Tobacco Smoke
Nicotine is the most widely
known chemical in tobacco smoke. Most recent research has
revealed that the original tobacco plant as grown by the native
Indians did produce nicotine only in the instance that the
plant´s leaves where attacked by caterpillars or other insects.
As you may know, nicotine is a very strong and severe nervous
system poison. The plant released some nicotine and the leaf
eating insect would die.
The original, natural tobacco
plant produced nicotine only in the instance of such insect
attacks. However, during the cultivation process of the tobacco
plant, the control mechanism somehow got lost and today´s
modern tobacco plants as we use in our cigarettes do produce
nicotine permanently. As such, it is a continuous nerve
poisoning process all smokers are exposed to.
Besides nicotine most people
are amazed to find out that there are more over 4000 (four
thousand) other chemicals being released or produced when
tobacco burns. Most of these substances are known to scientists
only and have very obscure names (this is just how scientists
are...). In following just a "short" list of the more familiar
ones:
CADMIUM CARBON MONOXIDE
CARBON DIOXIDE AMMONIA PROPANE METHANE METHANOL NICKEL
COMPOUNDS BENZENE ISOPRENE HYDROGEN SULPHIDE ACREOLIN ACETONE
HYDROCYANIC ACID HYDROGEN CYANIDE CREOSOL METHYL NITRATE
NITROGEN OXIDE DDT PYRIDINE TAR FORMALDEHYDE BUTADIONE
NICOTINE.... and so on!
Killing, isn´t it? And,
seriously spoken: Yes it really is!
In addition to these
chemicals that are released purely as a result of the dried
tobacco leaf burning - there are various additional unfortunate
substances that may be present as a result of the plantation
environment and the conditions in which the harvested tobacco
leaves are stored and shipped.
Ok, that's the bad news...
but if you can make it and you do stop smoking... here are the
benefits:
After 20
minutes: Already after 20 minutes of your LAST
cigarette your blood pressure drops to normal and temperature
of hands and feet returns to normal. Reason is, that direct
additional input and exposure of the nerve poison nicotine is
now cut off.
After 8
hours: Carbon monoxide levels in the blood drop
back to normal and oxygen levels in the blood return to normal.
Be reminded, this is already after 8 hours!
After 24
Hours: One day after you´ve stopped your smoking
habit, the chance and risk of heart attacks already begins to
decrease. You´re not off the risk yet, but time starts working
for you.
After 48
hours: This is one of the phantastic miracles of
our body, Already 2 days after you´ve stopped smoking, nerve
endings (that have been destroyed by nicotine!!!) start to
re-grow and the ability to smell and taste improves. But there
is also a bad news and it is entirely up to you´re own will to
overcome and manage this: your addiction to nicotine strongly
starts to try to drive you back to your habit. No excuses! You
MUST resist!
After 2
weeks: 2 weeks after you´ve stopped smoking your
blood circulation starts to improve. Physical exercise
including walking start becoming easier. Your lung function can
increase by up to one third. Amazing to see and feel, how your
body repairs itself. And what destruction the cigarettes had
already done to your body!
Be careful and remain strong!
Nicotine addiction will keep coming, and sometimes this can be
very intense. Keep on going, do not take even a single
cigarette. You have now processed so far, that it just makes no
sense to look back. Note that your addiction will most probably
continue to offend you for the next 2 - 4 month, depending on
your previous smoking habits, the quantity of cigarettes you
used to smoke and the time in years that you used to be a
smoker.
And if your really want to
stop smoking there is even more good news for you. If you have
the desire, why not contact your local hypnotherapist. However
make sure they are qualified, insured and experienced in
smoking cessation therapy. Smoking therapies are not just easy
going and I suggest you look for membership of at least one of
the main UK Institutes and Associations, which
include:
- British Institute of
Hypnotherapy
- General Hypnotherapy
Register (The Registering arm of the Hypnotherapy Standards
Council)
- National Council for
Hypnotherapy

Professional Hypnosis
- and the Psychotherapy
